Any thoughts on Mike Bauman going to the bullpen role?

Baumann has some bad statcast numbers

He’s fine. He’s nothing special right now. Probably not someone you trust in high leverage situations at the moment unless things are going really well but Hyde didn’t have a ton of options last night outside of staying with Bautista and even if he had, he still may have had to use Baumann in the 11th anyway.

I will say this though..it wouldn’t shock me if Baumann put together some really good seasons in the future. He has the stuff but the command control aren’t there yet.

That said, I trust him more than Fuji, so I would send down Fuji before Baumann.

The Coloumbe injury has really hurt the back end of the pen.  Perez has looked better, which is helpful but still, they need more.

That's a bit of an overstatement. I would agree Atlanta's chances of scoring at least one went way up.

Why?  Is Baumann so bad that he affects the outcomes of games played hundreds of miles from where he’s pitching?

My softball team had a big night offensively last night, can't help but wonder if Mike had something to do with that

To my surprise, Baumann hasn’t pitched that badly in high leverage situations this year (opposing hitters have hit 205/.280/.432).  I’m just never confident in the guy.  I don’t feel like he ever really knows where his pitches are going.  And, he’s been terrible with inherited runners (42% have scored), so having him in the game in extra innings just feels like a disaster waiting to happen.  Truth is, the two other times he pitched in extras, he held the opponents scoreless and picked up the win both times.  So he’s not really as unreliable as he feels to me.

Fuji is better than Bauman at the moment.  At least Fuji's stuff plays.  Bauman is getting lit up and his stuff seems to be not as good as it was.  Neither of them do a good job with runners on.  Replace Bauman with Means or Hall.  Maybe send Fuji down for whichever of Hall or Means comes up second.

Bauman at one point in time this season was good for the Orioles.  But Baker was maybe the best reliever on the team in April and he is gone.  Wells was one of the best starters, and he is gone.

Fuji has a 7 ERA this month…Baumann is at 5.59. Baumann has less walks in more IP.

Fuji has a better K rate.  Both have given up 2 homers this month. Baumann has done it in more innings.

Baumann looks cooked to me. A home run, a double, a long fly out and a wild pitch in probably less than 10 pitches is more than just a bad outing. Remember, this is a guy who has started pretty much his whole career until the last couple of years. He's never done this before and I think he has run out of gas. I wouldn't be surprised to see him land on the IL with some sort of soreness in the next day or two with Voth taking his spot.

Had to look at Bauman's game logs because it feels like he has been grooving pitches middle/middle lately. This certainly was the case last night in the 10th where his first 3 pitches were a homer, a double and a loud fly ball (out) to CF... then a wild pitch shortly after.

Feels like his last outing was the same story in Seattle (the Mullins robbed a homer, next at bat is a homer game...) but that was 10 days ago with 2 scoreless appearances in-between.

At this rate, he's too volatile to keep in our pen.

Your game stats chart does not show inherited runners scored.

Maybe having even one runner on base when he comes into a game is too much pressure for Baumann.

    • This posts wreaks of someone who has no idea what the cost of relievers are nowadays. Which is, of course, no surprise that you aren’t informed. Now that said, I don’t have an issue if you take someone out..I asked that very question. Who do you take out or what do you not acquire in favor of keeping Suarez?
    • You always have room for another high leverage guy.  And Akin has an option left according to FG.
    • Yea.  I feel the same way.  I really do not care strongly one way or another.  Sure, I think it's kind of ugly.  I also think HR's came pretty cheap before.  I like the exciting defensive plays it fosters and of course the random triple & odd carom make for some fun and unique moments.  But I don't think it helps or hurts the team in any substantial way short of helping out the pitching a little.   I sure don't think the players are changing their approaches.  If they keep it as is, that's fine with me.  If they modify it some way, that's fine with me as well.  It does seem like there is some opportunity for some unique seats down there by modifying it slightly.  When I first saw it, it almost appeared like a construction Phase 1.  That might be reasoning for pushing it back so far, allows them some flexibility in the future.   I also don't buy that a Free Agent RH hitter is going to care at all about the wall.   They are getting paid regardless.  I'd think that 1-maximizing payday 2-playing for a winner 3-finding a location that suits your family would be your priorities and your long-term stat line would be very close to the bottom of your list of concerns.
    • His "ability to play RF" carries about $0 value
    • Yeah but if you think most of this money is going to upgrade things that are wrong or need improving, such as the ones @accinfo lists, I think you'll be disappointed.   They will be for new features, each one designed to create revenue via premium seating or premium "experience" areas or attractions that bring non baseball fans to the park to spend or sports betting related things. I'm not saying they won't fix some basic things that need it like upgrading the sound system or improving the point of sale technology.   I'm sure they will.   But the focus is going to be on the new attractions which are all designed with revenue enhancement in mind.
    • I’m not a lawyer … perhaps @Frobbymight know. Loss of income, future revenues? Damage to their franchise….Even with MASN the Orioles lost a ton on annual tv revenues
    • Congrats to the offense on playing a heck of a game. Lamar was incredible to watch, especially the play when the snap ended up on the ground and he had to run away towards the sideline and still found Likely for the score. It's very frustrating to me that the offense HAD to play so well because of the poor coaching and abysmal defensive play.  It's odd to me that Harbaugh still messes up timeout usage after being a coach in the league for over 15 years.
